The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.

TISS Tuljapur is an institute of excellence in higher education and was established in 1986 with the mission of promoting social justice and sustainable development. The uniqueness of our Institute lies in its carefully designed Master’s programmes that are built on a multi-dimensional pedagogy that comprises teaching the theoretical framework in-depth, learning the practicalities of the field, field action projects, and research, all oriented towards contributing to the social sector. The students at the TISS Tuljapur campus come from diverse academic backgrounds with equally varying work experience across many states and have undergone intensive learning as part of their programmes, based on both theoretical study and extensive fieldwork in rural as well as urban areas.
Concurring with this, I would like to provide you with some information about our Masters Programmes:
1. M.A. in Social Work in Rural Development:
The programme, a blend of Social Work and Rural Development, has been designed to meet the needs of trained rural development professionals in designing and managing rural development programmes and cater to the increasing demand for development professionals with advanced social work skills.
2. M.A. in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship:
The programme is planned to help students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to launch a new social entrepreneurial venture or play a key leadership role in an existing one and focuses on the unique entrepreneurial processes associated with the creation or discovery of positive social change by using business skills to address complex social problems.
3. M.A. /M.Sc. in Development Policy, Planning, and Practice:
This programme has been designed to address the needs of Policy Analysts; specifically, Planners and Practitioners, to understand the intricacies of multilevel planning and policymaking processes. The programme is based on the unequivocal recognition of the importance of policy-making and planning and, therefore, integrates national and international perspectives of Development Policy.
4. M.A./M.Sc. in Sustainable Livelihood and Natural Resources Governance:
This programme seeks to develop trained livelihood professionals with vital democratic and value-oriented in-depth knowledge of the theoretical framework and have a multidisciplinary approach to understanding ecology, eco-sensitivity, sustainability and practice of sustainable development and linkages between Natural Resource and their governance and interdependence.
