The recently released draft amendments to the Wildlife (Protection) Act (WLPA) have come after the last amendments in 2006. Post 2006, important laws dealing with community led conservation like the Forest Rights Act (FRA) and the those dealing with compensation to and rehabilitation of displaced communities like the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act (LARR) have been passed. These laws require coordination with the WLPA to democratise the conservation and protection regime of the country.
At the same time with unique ecological and biological problems created by the WLPA’s protectionist regime, it is important that the act is amended to suit current and future issues.
