The course Thinking About Education is founded on the belief of ‘wholeness’ of education. It will help participants to reflect on their ideas about education, they would have been forming from through hear-say, and their own interpretations of their experiences. Through a deliberate analysis of issues in school education this course tries to show that different aspects of education are interrelated and that it is crucial to visualize the entire picture of education for working in the field. For example : Is it important for someone teaching science pedagogy to teachers to understand the relationship between democracy and education? Or Should a mathematics teacher reflect on the purpose of educating a human being at all? Or Should history teachers care about the nature of science and its importance? The underlying idea is that without understanding the relationships of parts of education with the whole but merely knowing the fragments may not be of great help. After all, none of the seven blind men could actually know the elephant itself. This course gives a glimpse of the larger picture of the current scenario of school education, challenges in students’ learning, current policy discourse and some basic theoretical tools to make sense of everyday classroom experiences.
The ‘Thinking about Education’ is for anyone who is teaching, or who would like to teach, or help teachers in any subject and any context – be it at school, at home or in the workplace.
