Why did we launch People Power Change?

The world is changing, and changing fast. Like never before, people have the power to shape society and communities to create a better future. New and old forms of activism – from voicing our opinion, to advocating for social changes or developing unconventional paths forward, are the key and can be organized effectively to make tomorrow better than today. We need more trained changemakers who are equipped with the skills and organized in a manner to formulate, articulate and assert their shared interests.

The ongoing pandemic pushed us to reimagine what challenges and opportunities look like in situations of uncertainties. During this time of vulnerability, people came together, organized themselves to take a people-centric approach to address myriad challenges. This is exactly the basis of organizing – to take a people-powered approach during conditions of uncertainty. With the onset of a worldwide pandemic, a lot has been exposed in terms of the loopholes in societal systems. NOW is the time – to create the urgency to address societal challenges and to bring change.

The People, Power & Change (PPC) program has been designed to empower young leaders, civic associations, advocacy groups, and social movements by teaching them how to organize communities, drive change through campaigning and leadership development across issues of social-economic-political significance.

People Power Change Program, 2021

The People Power Change (PPC) is Haiyya’s flagship yearly 5-day course where we offer narrative and organizing training to young leaders, changemakers and activists working in formal, semi-formal and movement based organizations and collectives pan India. The aim is to equip the leaders with relevant tools and knowledge of the people-power approach to organize their communities to drive change across diverse issues.

Program objectives and intentions:

• Orient leaders with the pedagogy of Community Organizing and dig deeper to put them in the Indian socio-cultural context
• Develop coaching as a meaningful and non-hierarchical practice
• Understand and speak the language of organizing as a crucial tool for socio-cultural-political change 

PPC 2021 is scheduled from Monday, 22nd November to Friday, 26th November, from 9:15 am to 2:30 pm 

Program Journey

Workshop Duration: 6 to 7 hours (9 am to 2:30 pm every day)

Platform: Zoom 

Meetings: 1:1 conversation with Coach before 22nd November to get to know each other and address any questions

Program Offering

• The Framework: People-powered framework that provides a perspective and set of tools to organize leadership and resources into power to strategically drive your current work/campaign
• Theory to Practice: All sessions will follow this model of learning: we  explain, we model, you practice, and we debrief. The intention is to have an experiential learning
• Interactive Learning: Real-time campaigns will be used as examples. Campaigners and movement builders will interact with you for some sessions (public narrative & strategy). An opportunity to directly interact with them to understand their journey, challenges and how to overcome them
• Peer Learning and Coaching: You will be part of a cohort of 5-6 leaders working on similar issues. Your cohort will be led by a Coach along with a Companion Coach. They will nudge and ask important questions to find solutions together, deal with challenges and come up with innovative ideas to bring change. Also an opportunity to work with like-minded as well as diverse individuals and practice peer coaching & learning. 
• Continued Collaboration and Engagement: Being part of Haiyya’s program is not a one-time engagement. This is an opportunity to be a part of Haiyya Organizers’ community and network, continue learning and working with each other and become a part of more interesting campaigns, movements and programs. It may also lead to stepping up as a Coach in Haiyya’s upcoming programs.

Who should apply?

• Self-driven and aspiring Individuals who are working to create social impact and committed to learn the pedagogy of community organizing, to implement it and  bring change
• Campaigners, movement builders, leaders representing youth collectives, development professionals and anyone  working on diverse issues and willing to bring change
• Individuals and leaders committed and willing to use people-powered approaches to bring change in the Indian ecosystem

What will you offer as a PPC candidate?

• You are expected to commit to all 5 days, 1:1s with your coach and meetings with your cohorts
• You are expected to contribute actively, ask questions, practice, make and take space when required and create a collective learning and coaching space with your cohort

Fee Structure: INR 10,000 – For any individual applying from registered youth-led organizations, collectives and groups.

Note: 

• Scholarships available on need basis for limited seats

• Applicants from Dalit, Bahujan, Adivasi and other gender-sexual, geographical or any marginalized communities are highly encouraged to apply, and will be given half/full-scholarship
• Individuals from Tier 2 & Tier 3 cities are encouraged to apply
