August 11, 2021 – Open call for applications and December 31, 2021 is the deadline for submissions.

The New India Foundation is introducing Translation Fellowships dedicated to bringing non-fiction works from Indian languages to English. In pursuit of fulfilling the objectives of the NIF to foster scholarship around Independent India and to provide a wider audience for Indian-language texts, 3 Translation Fellowships will be awarded from across 10 languages for the research and translation of non-fiction texts published from 1850 onwards.

Languages | Assamese, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil and Urdu.

Grant | INR 6 lakhs for each fellow

The New India Foundation’s focus on translating historical texts from Indian languages into English hopes to foster comparative literature about different states and streams of progress. This venture aims to create an expansive cultural reach for works which have thus far been confined to those who understand the original language of their composition.

The Fellowship has no constraints regarding the genre or style of the original text, the nationality of the translator, or the ideology of the material.

In each round of the NIF Translation Fellowships, we will alternate languages to ensure that we support a pan-Indian representation of linguistic diversity.

In a country like ours with its stunning plurality of language, being able to facilitate translations from various Indian bhashas to English—and encouraging newer demographics of translators for the same—would be a step towards resolving gaps in information and creating a more comprehensive national picture of India as it has emerged today.
