The African Climate Foundation (ACF) is the first African-led strategic climate change grant-making foundation on the continent. It was established to provide a mechanism through which philanthropies can contribute to Africa’s efforts to address climate change.
As an African-based foundation, it is committed to supporting climate resilient development pathways across the continent.
Background and Objective
The African Climate Foundation is supporting the establishment of a regenerative centre of excellence in food production in Marikana, South Africa. Learnings from the project will be critical in understanding the scalability or not of the model being developed. As such, the ACF is looking for an MEL consultant to work closely with the Project Steering Committee to develop a detailed monitoring, evaluation and learning plan (covering a range of indicators from biophysical to socio-economic) that can be used to track impact.

1. Environmental indicators
a. Carbon sequestration
b. Soil health indicators
i. Water intensity of production identified by farm and source
c. Biodiversity gains on farm
d. Nutrient density of foods produced
2. Economic indicators
a. Quantity of crop and livestock produced and turnover (aggregate and per farmer)
b. Number of offtake agreements (total and % sold to export and domestic markets).
c. Gross and net farmer income disaggregated by source
d. Discrepancies between projected and actual budget lines
e. Proportion of produce sold to Unilever that meets their production standards
f. Average price received per kg per crop from Unilever and from domestic market
3. Social indicators
a. Security and satisfaction of farmers
b. Average number of hours spent per week by farmers on farm labor
c. Quantity and quality of work for additional labor employed
d. Quality of working relationship among the farmers
