Experiences and stories are our tools of choice, as we endeavour to make the subject of gender-based violence mainstream. We speak to our large and diverse audience in a language they can relate to, using mediums they respond to – such as music, new media and popular culture.
This new approach to problem-solving is what led to the music album “Mann ke Manjeere”. What started as a music video, took on a life of its own and became a movement. We have since focused our efforts on opening doors, breaking barriers, and starting honest conversations about gender, violence and discrimination, with women, men, adolescents, youth, families and communities as units, frontline health workers, government officials, influencers etc.
With partners that have supported us, media platforms that have amplified our call, and messaging that has translated into tangible action on the ground, our endeavour to transform the world around us grows stronger every day. Our approach of one home, one workplace, one community at a time have helped create a positive impact on millions of women and girls.
Our story is a sum total of many truths and realities that propel us to work towards creating a change in our social environments.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Over-sensationalization and misrepresentation of violence and discrimination against women and girls reinforces regressive cultural norms and unwittingly perpetuates a victim-blaming attitude. In an effort to respond to these concerns, Breakthrough engages in partnership with media houses encourage and promote sensitive, responsible and ethical coverage of issues involving violence and discrimination against women and girls.
In order to take this mission forward with greater resolve and participation of key stakeholders, Breakthrough has designed a Media Fellowship Programme (MFP) for working journalists.The programme includes full-time reporters, freelance journalists, photojournalists, video journalists working in print, television and online media in India to sensitize and educate them about responsible reporting on issues related to gender-based violence and discrimination against women and girls.
A 9-month long intense fellowship programme with a group of 10 journalists from Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) and Uttar Pradesh will aim to strengthen their understanding and awareness level on gender-based stories. The Media Fellowship Programme will provide the trainees the opportunities to interact with gender experts, senior reporters and other relevant stakeholders through workshops The trainees will get opportunities to visit Breakthrough’s intervention areas in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana; interact with the community leaders, and gather stories from the ground. As an indicator to measure progress and level of understanding, during the last 3 months of the fellowship programme, each trainee will be required to get a minimum of 5 articles published in print or digital media platforms, one story each on any audio/visual platform related to relevant issues.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the Media Fellowship Programme one is expected to meet the following criteria: Professional journalists, including freelancers, working in print, television or online media in India
Eligible Country: The fellowship is available for Indian journalists from Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh
Applicants must possess a minimum of one year of professional experience of covering socio-political-economic issues.
Experience around gender issues, feminist issues, intersectionality, health will be an added advantage. Commitment of 4-5 days in a month. During the last 3-4 months, fellows will be asked to travel to Breakthrough’s nearest intervention areas to cover stories.
Interested journalists should send the following documents along with their application:
Curriculum Vitae along with a cover letter
Copies of / links to previous reporting
Letter of recommendation from the professional referee detailing the applicant’s journalistic abilities and aptitude for the fellowship.
Applicants must provide a ‘letter of support’ from the editor of their current employer/editor assuring Fellows time and agreeing to publish the articles written by the Fellows in their publication.
Freelancers can provide reference of their previous work with bylines
Applicants must have at least a national diploma or degree in Journalism, media or communications
