Wildlife Trust of India The official page of Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), a non-profit conservation organisation, committed to urgent action that works towards the protection of India’s wildlife. Its mission is to conserve nature, especially endangered species and threatened habitats, in partnership with communities and governments.
Established in November 1998, in response to the rapidly deteriorating condition of the country’s wildlife, with only three staff members, WTI now has a team of over 100 full-time professionals and consultants, in addition to volunteers from all walks of life.
The core team includes scientists, field biologists, conservation managers, veterinarians, lawyers, finance, business management and communication specialists, who operate diverse conservation projects across India. In 20 years, WTI has grown to be one of India’s premier wildlife NGOs.
The principal concerns of WTI include crisis management and provision of quick, efficient aid to individuals, species or habitats that require it the most. In its 21 years of operations, WTI has saved more than 42,000 animal lives, trained and equipped 20,000 frontline forest staff and covered them under India’s pioneering supplementary accident assurance scheme that also covers Covid-19, assisted the govt. in creating 7 Protected Areas, sensitised 25 lakh children to conservation, protected almost 1200 sq km of natural habitat including mangroves and coral reefs, assisted enforcement agencies in almost 240 seizures. WTI is a registered charity in India (under Section 12A of the Income Tax Act, 1961) and is mandated by its Board of Trustees to ensure that 85 % of all specified donor monies go to the field for direct conservation action.
We are looking for a passionate, experienced and dynamic person to manage Wildlife Trust of India’s, Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation Division. Candidates aspiring to develop and execute projects aimed at reducing or sustainably managing human-wildlife conflicts in priority landscapes, especially concerning large mammals such as Asian elephants, Bengal tigers and Leopards, and having required experience in this sub-field of wildlife conservation, are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications and Experience
1. At least a Master’s degree in the field of Environmental/Wildlife Sciences/Social Anthropology or Sociology.
Candidates with a doctorate will be preferred.
2. At least 8-10 years of experience in developing, fundraising and management of field conservation projects.
Experience in development and execution of projects focussing on human-wildlife conflict will be favoured.
3. Proven analytical and team management skills is essential.
4. Experience of developing logical frameworks for implementation, proposals for fundraising, drafting of technical reports.
5. Experience in liaising with Government Departments, specialized agencies and organisations, as well as funding agencies
6. Ability to work under pressure and manage crises is also desirable.
Broad Role:
1. To develop existing and new projects focussing on human-wildlife conflict mitigation
2. Develop long-term plans (including Problem Trees, Theory of Change and Logical Implementation Frameworks) for all existing (as well as any new conflict mitigation projects) projects in consultation with team members and other conservation sectors within the organisation.
3. Ensuring delivery of project deliverables (Outcomes and Outputs) through delegation of responsibilities to relevant project heads and other project staff.
4. Development of Protocols of operation for various projects in the division and ensuring the same if followed under each project
5. Maintain databases pertaining to human-wildlife conflicts, and develop new ones based on need.
6. Develop manuscripts for internal and peer-reviewed publication
7. Liaise with representatives of donor and external partner agencies, for fundraising and co-planning of projects under the division.
8. Raise funds through networking with various national and international funding agencies to ensure continuity of existing projects and for kick-starting new projects.
9. Manage project teams to ensure timely execution of planned project activities, and to ensure smooth teamwork.
