Visual Communication Designer :Vihara

Vihara is an innovation and impact organization that works to bring social and welfare systems closer to the communities they are intended to serve. It does this using the disciplines and tools of contextual inquiry, behavioral insights, systems thinking. human-centered design, prototyping and design-informed approaches to learning and evaluation.

In recent years, Vihara has seen significant success using these approaches in areas such as vaccine uptake, contraceptive adoption, and gender equality. Vihara works closely with donors like USAID and BMGF, and is now actively exploring partnerships so that its methodologies can be deployed in South and South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa to bring rapid changes to key outcome indicators.

Overview:

Vihara is seeking a Visual Communication Designer who is passionate about understanding complex issues and communicating them effectively through design. The ideal candidate will assist in developing visual communication strategies, employing design thinking, and utilizing analytical and problem-solving skills. This role requires a foundation in building information architectures, content strategies, and coherent communication styles across various program deliverables.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge in Visual Semantics and Visual Design: Understanding of the psychology and cognition of visual design, with an emphasis on information design, editorial design, and typography. Experience and work in information, communication, and social design
  • Creative and Analytical Skills: Ability to synthesize information, draw connections, and present complex ideas in an engaging and accessible manner.
  • Information Design Skill Sets: Ability to create clear and impactful data visualizations, infographics, and other information design materials.
  • Interactive Prototyping and Testing: Experience in rapidly creating prototypes using relevant software, and iteratively testing prototypes on the field with users and beneficiaries.
  • Storytelling and Narrative Building: Aptitude for visual storytelling and narrative construction, with prior experience or coursework in strategic communications or design research projects.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication abilities, capable of conveying ideas accurately and creatively.
  • Visual Design Sensibility: Experience or coursework in art direction and visual storytelling across mixed media, including print, digital, photography, and illustration.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite: Strong skills in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, and Collaborative platforms like Figma, Canva, and Google Suite.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Time Management: Effective planning and organizational skills to manage tasks and meet deadlines.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Support Content Strategy and Communication Style: Assist in the development and implementation of intervention strategies and visual aids for various programs.
  • With support from senior designers, design and develop interventions, and visual aids, iteratively port
  • Content Strategy and Communication Style: Assist in the development and implementation of intervention strategies and visual aids for various programs.
  • With support from senior designers, design and develop interventions, and visual aids, iteratively prototype and test it on the field, and adapt them to create the final suite of solutions for implementation.
  • Create Project Communication Materials: Contribute to the creation of project communication tools and aids for different stakeholders that clearly illustrate program narratives and strategies.
  • Assist in Strategic Direction: Support the senior team members in envisioning structures, templates, communication styles, and visual languages for project content.
  • Collaborate on Content design and Outputs: Work closely with team members and designers to creatively package insights and field learnings into visually rich innovation narratives, aid the project manager and team in preparing client reports and other deliverables.
  • Document Project Processes: Assist in documenting project processes and capturing pivotal design decisions and turning points.
  • Manage Online Presence: Help curate and manage the program’s online presence, including its website, blog, and social media platforms.
  • Coordinate with Team and Vendors: Seamlessly coordinate with the program team, design advisors, and external vendors to develop, edit, render, and oversee production of communication materials.
  • Maintain Communication Archives: Assist in maintaining a robust archive of all project communication materials, complete with introductory blurbs, out-briefs, project documentation, and imagery.
