Psychologist – Sangath

Apply by 05th October 2023

Sangath is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation committed to improving health across the lifespan by empowering existing community resources to provide appropriate physical, psychological and social therapies. Its primary focus areas include child development, adolescent and youth health, and mental health and chronic disease. Started in 1996, it began as Goa’s first multi-disciplinary child development clinic based in Porvorim through the voluntary contributions of its seven founder-members. Sangath has now stretched its reach to become one of the state’s most influential health NGOs garnering local, national and international recognition.

Project EMPOWER in Phase 1 involved training Community health workers (ASHAs) across three districts of Madhya Pradesh (Raisen, Vidisha, Narmadapuram) in psychological treatment of depression (Healthy Activity Program-HAP). Project EMPOWER in Phase 2 involved the delivery of HAP counselling therapy to clients
screened positive for depression using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Trained Community health workers (ASHAs) were responsible for conducting screening in the communities using PHQ-9 and delivering the screened positive patients (PHQ-9 score>10) counselling as per HAP. They were provided routine supervision and guidance by the EMPOWER project team.

In the current year (Phase 3), we have expanded our work to focus on the field of perinatal depression. We are currently training ASHAs on Thinking Healthy Program Peer delivered (THPP); an evidence based psychosocial intervention for perinatal depression. The THPP trained ASHAs will then screen perinatal mothers for perinatal depression and deliver THPP therapy to those women who are screened positive for perinatal depression.
