NCAER’s roots lie in Prime Minister Nehru’s early vision of a newly-independent India needing independent institutions as sounding boards for the government and the private sector. Remarkably for its time, NCAER was started in 1956 as a public-private partnership, both catering to and funded by the government and private industry. NCAER’s first Governing Body included the entire Cabinet of Economics Ministers and the leading lights of the private sector, including names like C.D. Deshmukh, J.R.D. Tata, John Mathai, and Asoka Mehta. The Ford Foundation provided strong financial support in the early years, combined with support from the Finance Ministry and Tata Sons..

NCAER is India’s oldest and largest national, non-profit, independent economic research institute. NCAER has over its 65+ years of existence contributed to high-quality economic research that has a policy impact. It is among the few think tanks globally that have strong field data collection capabilities for national surveys. Its research covers almost the entire horizon of policy-focused applied research in economics, from macroeconomics to poverty and consumer behaviour. NCAER offers a wonderful place to grow and groom yourself into a policy economist. A vibrant, dynamic academic environment with both world-class faculty and physical infrastructure. If you run into a writer’s block, there are lovely views of Delhi. If you want to unwind, play a game of table tennis or badminton. Or just a lovely walk around the campus with a colleague to spur your creativity.
NCAER has an active research programme on climate change. It has decided to grow the programme further in response to the increasing urgency and demand for policy solutions to challenges posed by climate change.
