  • The Senior Manager, ESG Reporting, Verification and Assurance lead will work with senior business, functions and finance stakeholders to ensure that Group external ESG disclosures are fair, balanced, understandable, and meet disclosure requirements.
  • This role is a unique opportunity to work in an area of growing interest to regulators, investors, and the wider external market. Disclosure rules and regulation for ESG topics are evolving globally. There is a need to understand new and changing disclosure requirements, and how these can be best met through Group’s external reporting.
  • As the ESG disclosures have grown in prominence, there has been an increased need for robust assurance and oversight of disclosed ESG materials.
  • The Senior Manager, ESG Reporting, is responsible for the design, execution and documentation of Group’s approach to Verification and Assurance to support ESG disclosure and related controls to ensure consistent, reliable and accurate reporting of non-financial data. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Leading on improving the ESG Verification and Assurance framework, embedding the controls environment and working with 2LOD assurance functions across the bank to develop a BAU process and further reduce the risk of external ESG disclosures
  • Manage operational aspects of executing on the V&A framework at Interim and Year end as well as on ad-hoc basis for various important disclosures (eg. Shareaction return, CDP, ESG Rating agencies returns)
  • Involvement in supporting the wider HSBC climate strategy
  • Support/consult/engage with key stakeholders in Group.
  • Support the delivery of the new requirements that are evolving

Principal Accountabilities: Key activities and decision making areas

Play a lead role in:

  • coordinating the production of external Group’s ESG disclosures;
  • and driving continuous improvement by suggesting ideas and supporting delivery of optimisation and improvement of ESG processes.

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Build trusted relationships with contributors in the business and function areas to facilitate robust, balanced and informed reporting;
  • Work closely with Group Regulatory Policy to understand and interpret ESG disclosure requirements;
  • Build effective relationships with other relevant reporting cycle stakeholders as needed (e.g. Strategy,
  • Sustainability, Risk, Investor Relations);
  • Assist in resolving senior management queries (e.g. Group CFO, Group Financial and Regulatory Reporting, Head of Investor Relations), rating agency, investor or client questions where material for the Group.
  • Act as the single point of contact coordinating external auditor assurance reviews over ESG disclosures;
  • Participate in local and regional industry forums, as appropriate on ESG disclosures;
  • Support ESG Senior Manager, GCB3 with reporting to the Group Audit and Risk Committees on ESG disclosure matters and other governance forums

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Maintain awareness of industry and regulatory developments that might impact the Group ESG disclosures and make recommendations on how HSBC can best meet changing disclosure requirements.
  • Lead the project and operational management of all ESG reporting deliverables and processes, including maintenance of process and assurance documentation.
  • Maintain and drive strong controls around data integrity and accuracy for all ESG reporting.

Role Context:

The Senior Manager, ESG Reporting, role sits in the Group Financial and Regulatory Reporting function, itself part of Core Finance, a global team responsible for leading internal and external financial reporting, controls oversight, forecasting, stress testing and other key finance functions.

Management of Risk (Operational Risk / FIM requirements)

Assess the operational risks associated with the role, taking account of changing market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, changes in the bank’s management structure and the impact of new technology.

Ensure that:

All decisions and actions take account of the likely operational risk implications;

Areas of concern are addressed promptly in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department.

Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)

Maintain HSBC’s internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit issues and any issues raised by external regulators.

Understand, follow and demonstrate compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which you are involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including the Group Compliance policy.

Role Dimensions

Group-wide role responsible for:

Plan and coordinate the execution of the Verification and Assurance framework at Interim and Year-end as well as ad-hoc for of all Group ESG related disclosures via the Annual Report & Accounts and ESG Datapack

Liaise with 2LOD assurance team to embed the V&A to form part of the BAU process to reduce ESG risk, agree scope of work and execute during year-end to ensure any raised issues are mitigated before the disclose is made

Assist in other ad-hoc activity as they come up in a evolving ESG space to support ESG Senior Manager, GCB3
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience within Finance at a major institution, ideally with experience of managing new reporting requirements.
  • Commercial outlook – able to connect numbers, performance drivers and ‘real world’ events
  • Highly-motivated, diligent, collaborative, personable and capable of working independently and exercising judgment.
  • Project management skills, including creating lean processes and governance structures.
  • Strong people and communication skills – able to develop and articulate a viewpoint when working with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Able to prioritise tasks, resolve problems and respond effectively to emerging issues.
  • Able effectively to work effectively within a complex, global organisation.

Qualifications

Quantitative degree, ideally with professional education in Finance (Qualified Accountant).

Skills

Strong skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint.Fluent English (written and spoken).
