The Policy Fellow – Regulatory will make GFI India’s work possible by working closely with colleagues in the
Policy team to accelerate the impact of smart protein (plant based, cultivated, and fermentation-derived meat, eggs and dairy) – foods which are vastly better for human and planetary health than their conventional counterparts. You will play a pivotal role in our mission to tackle the world’s most pressing problems relating to climate change, global hunger, antibiotic resistance, and future pandemics, by working to build the narrative and fair path to market for the smart protein sector and GFI India’s work in the country.

How You Will Make a Difference
As a mission-focused non-profit, GFI India builds the smart protein sector across business, science, and policy. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
● conduct evidence-driven research to ensure a regulatory path-to-market for plant-based, fermentation derived and cultivated proteins (collectively called smart protein) in India.
● build and maintain relationships across regulatory stakeholders
● lead research and strategy building to support our broader regulatory and policy work within a fast-paced, supportive, and impactful organization.

Key Responsibilities

As a Policy Fellow – Regulatory, you will be expected to provide support in the following areas of the Policy function:

Regulatory research and analysis

Conducting primary and secondary research on key regulatory and policy areas which may include:
● Conducting a detailed review of existing regulations including but not limited to non-specified foods,
proprietary foods, novel ingredients, trade and export laws impacting smart protein products.
● Providing support in drafting letters, comments, policy briefs, and fact sheets to support GFI’s regulatory priorities.
● Providing supporting material in submissions to regulators and analyzing regulatory proposals.

Strategic knowledge building
As outputs from research and analysis, develop collateral for external use by entrepreneurs and regulatory bodies which can involve:
● Preparing briefs on existing regulations on non-specified, novel ingredients and other themes of focus such as labelling, safety assessments, and related areas that are important to advance knowledge building for the sector.
● Analyzing and developing legal arguments, fact-sheets in support of clear pathways of smart protein products and ingredients in regulation.

Regulatory engagement and advisory
● Provide support in developing communiques for government officials and companies which can include letters of representation, submissions, presentations and general outreach
● Assist in liasoning with key stakeholders from a regulatory perspective and support efforts to involve them in the Policy Team’s work.
● Cultivating relationships with other organizations, including those focused on consumer protection, and food safety issues, to build alliances and support for the policies that will be most effective in increasing plant-based options and ensuring the safety and clear labeling of cultivated meat and fermentation-derived protein.
● Speaking persuasively to legal and nonlegal audiences on alternative protein and related regulatory and policy issues.
● Supporting key industry litigation efforts, including coordinating with counsels of companies on strategy, conducting legal research, and drafting briefs.
● Work with other departments as needed to provide policy and regulatory support to their initiatives and to encourage their involvement in the Policy Team’s policy and regulatory priorities.
● Coordinating with policy staff at GFI’s international affiliates to maintain alignment in advocacy efforts and collaborate on international issues.

As a part of this role, you will also be expected to perform other tasks as required.

Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for smart, thoughtful, and creative self-starters who want to push back against climate
change, transform industrial animal agriculture, and develop healthy and humane foods that are accessible
to everyone. GFI India staff enjoy high levels of autonomy and must be self-motivated, work well both independently and in concert with a larger group, and be comfortable working with a rapidly evolving and
growing team.

The Policy Fellow – Regulatory must have:
● A Bachelor of Law degree
● 2-5 years of experience in a law firm/legal research/policy advocacy/regulatory affairs or other related areas.
● Basic knowledge of the global and Indian food regulatory landscape including major regulatory bodies and regulations such as the non specified food regulation
● Strong persuasive and analytical legal writing skills.
● Self-motivation and a strong work ethic.
● Support for GFI India’s philosophy and an ability to advocate professionally for GFI India’s positions.

The ideal candidate will also have experience in coalition-building and developing consensus among
stakeholders and partners who hold different, yet complementary objectives.

Terms of employment: Full-time, One year contract with a three month probationary period

Reports to: Satvika Mahajan, Policy Specialist; Sneha Singh, GFI India General Manager
Location: Mumbai (currently remote working, to be evaluated in light of Covid-19)
Salary: 12 lakh per annum
