SELCO Foundation’s 25,000 Future Sustainability Ambassadors Program for Girls and 10,000 Sustainability driven Innovators Program for Women

Space station batteries, windshield wipers, caller ID on the phone, dishwasher, home security systems and monopoly have one thing in common. They were all invented by women. All the mentioned innovations have revolutionised the way we work today. There are numerous such examples in India to and at all levels. Janaki Amal’s work in Sugarcane and brinjal, Kamala Sohonie’s expertise in plant tissue, Ashima Chatterjee’s contribution in Anti-Malaria drugs are some of the numerous Indian innovators that we know of. In today’s world, we have examples like Tessi Thomas, the Missile Woman of India and Anuradha TK known for launching satellites in ISRO.

Many of them have struggled alone, in a hugely man dominated field. Unrealistic expectations from society have prevented numerous young girls and women to take the path of innovation and entrepreneurship. The hurdles are many. The balance between professional and family life is a challenging one for women, that numerous men do not have to go through, thus their talent goes a-begging.

SELCO Family has taken up the challenge to change the existing status quo for women and will strive to make it a level playing field for women leaders from all walks of life to innovate, invent, create enterprises, rise the ranks of any organisation they chose to.

On March 8th 2022, the SELCO Foundation is launching its ambitious program to inspire at-least 10,000 young women to excel in the field of sustainable energy, to become innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs, chief sustainability officers, educators etc. In addition to this, SELCO will also embark on creating 25,000 girls as Future Ambassadors of Sustainability in line with UN 2030 SDG goals. SELCO shall facilitate the creation of numerous platforms in the rural areas, to encourage rural women and girls to be equal partners in this endeavour.

SELCO shall work with many grassroots institutions, vocations schools like ITIs and Rudsetti, Local governments across the country to create pipelines to select, mentor and financially support 10,000 potential women innovators and entrepreneurs in the field of sustainable energy. For the program of Sustainability Ambassadors, SELCO shall work with at least 500 schools across the country, with a focus on rural, to develop a curriculum that shall lead to the 25,000 Women Sustainability Ambassadors that will help in India meeting its 2030 UN SDG goals.

By 2025, more than 10 million families will be impacted directly or indirectly by these two programs of
SELCO. And by 2030, SELCO hopes its program would have led to at least 100 million families coming
under the umbrella of sustainability.
Both the above programs will inspire other institutions to adopt similar programs in other fields like
health, education etc, resulting in reducing the gender disparity in technology, program management,
innovation, entrepreneurship etc. SELCO invites support from like-minded partners across the spectrum
of Government, private sector and civil society. The time has come to make the change, and it is now.
