CONNECTING THE DOTS : COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITIES
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) play a pivotal role in nation-building, particularly in the context of India’s socio-economic landscape. Acting as a crucial interface between the government and the communities on one hand and the corporations and communities on the other, the CSOs contribute significantly in achieving equitable and sustainable development. They have emerged as vital entities in the development process, working to fill critical gaps and championing empowerment while advocating for human-centric development.
The decades following India’s independence have seen a remarkable increase in the number of CSOs across various sectors. India’s civil society is one of the largest in the world, with over 200,000 registered CSOs, as indicated by NITI Aayog’s DARPAN portal. Unofficial estimates suggest that this number may rise to over 3.4 million when considering all active organisations.
Indian CSOs have significantly diversified their focus over the years. Involved in multi-sectoral programs addressing health, education, and community building. Many organisations have now honed in on specific initiatives focusing on economic empowerment. These CSOs have emerged as key players in building sustainable livelihoods through programmes that target income enhancement, skill development, promotion of entrepreneurship and access to finance, market, technology and entitlements, thereby enabling households to break the cycle of poverty.
The evolution of civil society organisations in India reflects a dynamic and responsive sector dedicated to addressing the diverse needs of communities. As they continue to grow and adapt, CSOs remain essential partners in promoting sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for millions across the nation, complementing and contributing to the Government’s overarching vision of an equitable inclusive India.
