Bridge : TISS

Bridge, started by the TISS student community, aims to strengthen the existing student aid mechanism at TISS.

For the longest time, the institute has taken in its stride the idea that education is a human right and it has had a history of holding its door open for students from all walks of life and from all kinds of social backgrounds. For this, the institute has had a stable and operational student’ aid and support system running under the Office Of Students Affair (OSA) and Social Protection Office (SPO) wherein students from disadvantaged backgrounds have been supplemented with financial aid and other supportive mechanisms.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.

Eklavya exists to democratize access to quality higher education and leadership opportunities by working with rural and tribal students through information, coaching and mentoring interventions. In the last five years, their intervention helped over 700 first-generation learners get admission into top-notch universities and development fellowship programs. Eklavya is on the mission to empower 10000 students through quality higher education and leadership opportunities by 2030. We believe this will enable the community to achieve social mobility.
