The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is a unique intergovernmental organisation initially established as a special project of UNIDO. Autonomous since 1994, it runs over 45 state-of-the-art laboratories, in Trieste, Italy, New Delhi, India and Cape Town, South Africa and forms an interactive network with almost 70 Member States, with operations are aligned to those of the United Nations System. It plays a key role in Biotechnology promoting Research excellence, Training, and Technology Transfer to industry, to contribute in concrete terms to sustainable global development.

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology ICGEB is an Intergovernmental Organisation and its operations are aligned to those of the United Nations Common System. It operates as a Centre of excellence for Research, Training and Technology Transfer to industry to promote sustainable global development.

ICGEB offers competitive Postdoctoral Fellowships in Life Sciences to highly motivated scientists wishing to pursue postdoctoral research in a world-class scientific environment. The Fellowships comprise a very competitive package including stipend, health insurance and additional benefits. The most successful fellows will also be eligible, upon completion, to apply for ICGEB Early Career Research Grants to support their own research programmes as young PIs upon return to an ICGEB Member State.

  • Academic records (PhD degree certificate, issued by the degree-granting University and bearing the official seal/s and signatures, to be submitted in the original language accompanied by an official English translation of each document).
  • Written Statement from the ICGEB Group Leader
  • A valid identification document (passport or identity card)
  • English Certificate (TOEFL, Cambridge or similar). This document is not requested when scholastic education has been undertaken in English.

Selection

All submitted applications will be transmitted to the respective ICGEB Liaison Officer in the country of which you are a national for endorsement. Endorsement is a fundamental requirement for the Fellowship to be awarded. The ICGEB Fellowships Selection Committee will evaluate complete and endorsed applications received by the closing date.

The main criteria for selection include scientific excellence of the project, the qualities of the candidate’s CV and potential benefit for the home country.The candidates will be notified of the outcome by e-mail as soon as possible following the closing date for applications.

Accommodation

ICGEB Trieste: ICGEB Trieste has no housing service or accommodation facilities. However, fellows will be provided with a list of possible contacts that offer housing options in Trieste.

ICGEB New Delhi: A Guest House is run on campus, on a twin-share basis, for a nominal rate. ICGEB Cape Town: Accommodation support is provided to fellows. Arrangements are agreed prior to arrival.

Eligibility

Applicants must be nationals of an ICGEB Member State and may not apply for fellowships to be undertaken in their country of origin, unless they have been working abroad for, at least, the last 3 years and at the time of application.

Degree requirements: applicants should hold a recent PhD in Life Sciences or have at least 3 years research experience.

Preference is given to candidates below the age of 35.

Financial support

  • Duration: 2 years with the possibility of a 1-year extension.
  • Monthly stipend: Trieste (Italy): Euro 2,000, New Delhi (India): US$ 1,590, Cape Town (South Africa): ZAR 23,000.
  • Travel: the fellowship includes provision for travel expenses from the participant’s home country to the ICGEB lab at the beginning of the fellowship and a return travel provision upon completion of the fellowship.
  • Medical health insurance coverage is provided for the duration of the fellowship.
  • All Research costs will be supported by the research group’s budget.
  • Visa/permit of stay application and renewal costs are reimbursed.
  • Support for participation in Meetings and Courses is generally provided by the Group Leader / PI.

ICGEB makes no financial provision, nor can it provide administrative support for family members of participants in the programme.

Eligibility criteria

Can I apply if I am not a national of an ICGEB Member State?
No, applicants must be nationals of an ICGEB Member State.

I am of Indian nationality. Can I apply for an Arturo Falaschi fellowship for the ICGEB New Delhi Component?
No, nationals of India, one of the ICGEB Host Countries, are not eligible to apply for ICGEB Fellowships in
their home country, unless they are working abroad for more than 2 years at the time of application.

I am of South African nationality. Can I apply for an Arturo Falaschi fellowship for the ICGEB Cape Town Component?
No, nationals of South Africa, one of the ICGEB Host Countries, are not eligible to apply for ICGEB Fellowships in their home country, unless they are working abroad for more than 2 years at the time of application.

I am a citizen of an ICGEB Member State, but I have lived in Australia for the past 9 years. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, applicants must be nationals of an ICGEB Members States, regardless of the country they have lived in.

I belong to a Signatory Country. Can I still apply?
No, the programme is open only to nationals of full ICGEB Member States.

I have double citizenship. Am I eligible for an ICGEB fellowship?
Yes, as long as one of your nationality belongs to an ICGEB Member State.

I received my PhD more than 5 years ago, am I eligible for a long-term post-doc?
Yes, however please note that preference is given to candidates below the age of 35.

I will graduate after the March deadline. Can I still apply for a long-term PhD fellowship? Can I apply for a PhD fellowship even if I have not received my degree yet?
Yes, you may apply with the proviso that you obtain a BSc (Honours) degree (if you apply for Trieste) and an MSc degree (if you apply for New Delhi/Cape Town), before the start of the fellowship. Please provide, in lieu of the Bachelor/Master diploma, a certificate issued by your University, confirming when you will complete your Bachelor/Master studies and complete with a transcript of all the courses completed and the scores obtained.

Please note that in the event that your PhD application is positively evaluated by the Fellowships Committee, the award will be kept on hold pending to the completion of your Bachelor/Master studies and submission of the relevant certificates.

I will defend my PhD thesis after the March/September deadline. Can I still apply for a long-term post-doc fellowship?

Yes, you may apply with the proviso that you obtain your PhD degree before the start of the fellowship.

Please provide, in lieu of the PhD certificate, a document issued by your University and confirming when you will complete your PhD studies.

Please note that, in the event that the Fellowships Committee positively evaluates your application, the award will be kept on hold pending to the completion of your PhD studies and submission of the relevant certificates.

Is there an age limit to apply?

Long-term PhD: Candidates for Trieste (Italy) must be below the age of 32 years at the time of application.
There is no age limit for applications for ICGEB New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa).
Long-term Post-doc: There is no age limit, but preference is given to candidates below the age of 35.
Short-term PhD: No age limit.
Short-term Post-doc: No age limit.
SMART: There is no age limit, however preference is given to young scientists at the beginning of their
research career.

To apply for a short-term fellowship do I have to be part of a group in an ICGEB Member State or I can apply without having any lab association?
You need to be associated with a lab as short-term fellowships are meant to fund ongoing collaborative
research between scientists from ICGEB Member States and research groups at the ICGEB laboratories in
Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town.

Do I need to be enrolled in a PhD Programme (or at least accepted for one) to be eligible for the short-term pre-doc fellowships?
No, but preference is given to candidates already enrolled in a PhD Programme
