The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.
Established in the year 2013, the School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG) has a mandate to create a cadre of public policy professionals who through their multi-disciplinary training respond to current challenges and incubate ideas to proactively meet future demands. The school provides interdisciplinary foundational training in Ethics and Policy, Economics (including big data analytics), Law, Political Science, and Sociology. It encourages students to be reflexive in developing institutional designs that can transform public services
Established in 1976, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) was tasked to bridge the gap between research and practice on issues related to urbanization and suggest ways and mechanisms to address urban challenges in the country. For more than 40 years now, NIUA has been the vanguard for contributing to, and at times, building the urban narrative for a fast evolving Urban India. The Institution has been actively working on bringing forth key areas of concern for urban India in order to build the urban discourse at various urban scales. It has utilized its competencies in research, knowledge management, policy advocacy and capacity building to address urban challenges and continuously striving to develop sustainable, inclusive, and productive urban ecosystems in the country. It has emerged as a thought leader and knowledge hub for urban development in India and is sought out by both Indian and International organizations for collaborations and partnerships in India’s urban transforming journey. NIUA is committed towards aligning its efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through all its initiatives and programs.

2) Post Graduate Diploma programme in Cities and Governance (One Year)

The School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG), TISS – Hyderabad and National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi offer a two-year interdisciplinary MA degree programme in Cities and Governance.
Aligned to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the MA programme will enable the students to develop a robust understanding of cities/towns. Such an understanding will incorporate a human perspective, which forms the basis for city planning, including aspects of economic growth and employment, environment, and sustainability. The focus will be on equipping students with methodological rigour, understanding of economic frameworks and institutional designs for envisioning inclusive and sustainable cities and towns. Although the focus will be on the global south, including Indian cities, the course discussions will also be situated in the comparative, macro-international context comprising cities from the global North.
Based on an understanding of the foundational disciplines of Economics, Statistics, Political Science, Sociology, Law and Data Sciences, the programme focuses on a diverse set of courses. These include courses on
Thus, theoretical frames are complemented by application to real-world situations, case studies, practical exercises conducted in city labs, and extensive field-based capstone projects. The programme creates multiple opportunities for the students to work on the currently operational government projects. Long internships, as imagined in the programme, allows leveraging the opportunities to facilitate and enable significant interface with governmental agencies.
The global nature of the course ensures that students have the necessary training to work across international contexts. The course is also relevant and attractive for international candidates, especially from Global South.

The School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG), TISS – Hyderabad, and National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi offer a one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in ‘Cities and Governance.’ Aligned to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this interdisciplinary programme enables professionals/students to advance their existing understanding of cities/towns that may augment their professional skills and career choices.
Going beyond the mandate of the existing and conventional programmes in urban studies and urban planning programmes, the Diploma course is designed to equip students to acquire rigorous training in methodology, data analytics, planning mechanisms and institutional design.
The effort is towards honing human professionals who can envision environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive cities. The Diploma programme will also focus on practical application to real-world situations through case studies and practical exercises conducted in city labs and a capstone project.
