The American India Foundation Is Committed To Improving The Lives Of India’s Underprivileged, With A Special Focus On Women, Children, And Youth.

In a country where extreme contrasts of wealth and poverty coexist in everyday life, we hear hopeful stories of India’s rise and rapid growth. Yet 800 million people – more than the entire population of Africa – live on less than two dollars per day in India. Amid the tragic devastation caused by the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee recognized the need for a philanthropy platform that would connect the world’s two largest democracies and provide a trusted bridge for meaningful participation in India’s democratic and economic growth for both Americans and Indians. The American India Foundation has since built on this vision and created countless opportunities for India’s poor to live successful, productive lives while creating impactful change at an unprecedented scale, changing the lives of more than 6.7 million of India’s less fortunate. The AIF Banyan Impact Fellowship is an immersive bi-national volunteer service program with immense strategic importance in the US-India corridor. By facilitating exchange and collaboration between young professionals from India and the US, the program aims to shape the next generation of leaders committed to positive and sustainable change and creating a lasting US-India relationship by broadening the existing constituency of future leaders, civil society and other stakeholders. Through its emphasis on a service-leadership model, the bilateral program places young professionals from the US and India in service with communities and organizations across the two countries for mutual learning, capacity building, and leadership development in support of social justice. Fellows work on projects closely linked to Sustainable Development Goals and create sustainable impact through service and fieldwork across diverse thematic areas such as education, public health, livelihoods, social inclusion, minority rights, Dalit and tribal rights, climate justice, LGBTQ+ rights, gender, arts, sports, CSR, and many others.Since 2001, AIF has selected, trained, and supported 501 Fellows and 216 partner organizations across 25 Indian states to scale impact, catalyze change, and build the next generation of socially-minded change makers. As the AIF Fellowship Program, formerly known as the William J. Clinton Fellowship, enters its third decade under a new avatar; ‘The Banyan Impact Fellowship’, we are proud to expand on the growth of the existing version of the program and add to it a new segment.Starting 2022, in addition to supporting service opportunities for Indians and Americans across Indian civil society organizations, the Fellowship Program will send social change professionals from India to serve across organizations in the US for capacity building and leadership development, thereby furthering the program’s mission of creating lasting ties between India and the US.

Inception of the US Chapter

The U.S.-India relationship, a coming together of the world’s two largest democracies, has tremendous potential. Historically, this partnership has been strongly rooted in the shared values of democracy and the premise that vibrant people-to-people interactions nurture the bilateral relationship. While both India and the U.S. have benefitted over the last two decades from cooperation, these successes are at risk of being undone by rising isolationism. The AIF Banyan Impact Fellowship addresses this directly by investing in future leaders that foster stronger ties between the two nations, with a more global, collective approach to development challenges faced by humanity. Over the last 20 years, the AIF Fellowship, through its service model, has made powerful investments into U.S.-India citizen diplomacy by shaping the next generation of leaders to advance positive social change.

As we head into the coming decade, reflective of our new realities and faced by global challenges at an unprecedented level, the need to double down efforts to reach the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 becomes more pressing. Recognizing the power of synergy between the US and India and the role that these two nations can play collectively on this front the AIF Fellowship Program is scaling up by introducing a new segment of US based collaborative learning and leadership development opportunity: The AIF Banyan Impact Fellowship for service in the United States.

The new Fellowship being built in partnership with Atlas Corps aims to broaden AIF’s existing constituency of a cross-generational pool of future leaders, civil society and other stakeholders, that strive together to build an equitable and sustainable World in the years to come.
