Website phf_uk Paul Hamlyn Foundation

Closing date Monday 11 July 2022

Paul Hamlyn Foundation was established by Paul Hamlyn in 1987. Upon his death in 2001, he left most of his estate to the Foundation, creating one of the largest grant-making foundations in the UK. Our mission is to help people overcome disadvantage and lack of opportunity, so that they can realise their potential and enjoy fulfilling and creative lives. We have a particular interest in supporting young people and a strong belief in the importance of the arts. We launched our current UK strategy in June 2015.

It is built around six strategic priorities, where we want to see change over the coming years:

• Support imaginative people to nurture exciting ideas

• Widen access and participation in the arts

• Improve people’s education and learning through the arts

• Show that the arts make a difference to people’s lives

• Support the development and growth of organisations investing in young people and positive change

• Improve support for young people who migrate, and strengthen integration so that communities can live well together

Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF) is one of the largest independent grant-making organisations in the UK. We use our resources to support social change, working towards a just and equitable society in which everyone, especially young people, can realise their full potential and enjoy fulfilling and creative lives.

Permanent and full-time
c. £54,000 depending on experience

As Head of Programmes – Arts, you will play a key role in developing our grant-making strategy, recommending to trustees what funding and support we should commit to the arts access and participation field and help us achieve our social justice ambitions.

You will support a small team of grants managers to provide exceptional service standards to those who apply to us. You will also be responsible for developing relationships with new potential applicants, for keeping abreast of developments to inform the Foundation’s future thinking, and with other funders to pool resources, advocate and make change happen.

You will also have a responsibility as part of the Management Team to help set the ‘cultural tone’ – one where people feel supported and thrive to deliver their work plans, achieve personal satisfaction in their work and can see and value the impact that it is having. You will support an atmosphere of collaborative working through shared objectives and learning.

To be successful as the Head of Programme, you will have significant experience of working in the arts sector and with charities at a senior level, with a good understanding of current policy issues. You will be a thoughtful and supportive manager, helping to bring out the best from your small team and learn from different approaches and thinking. Ideally you will have a good understanding of grant-making processes and monitoring, financial reporting, performance management and governance. Additionally, you will have a proven track record of an organised and methodical approach to work, combining numerical accuracy with attention to detail and an ability to meet deadlines.
