Project Sustainable Aquaculture for Food and Livelihood (SAFAL)
Project Background
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) is working on behalf of the German Government in more than 120 countries around the globe. Under the special initiative “ONE WORLD NO HUNGER (SEWOH)” the Global Programme Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture (GP Fish) is implementing projects in seven countries in Africa and Asia. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has requested GIZ to implement the Indo-German Development Cooperation Project “Sustainable Aquaculture for Food and Livelihood (SAFAL)” in cooperation with the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. The aim of the SAFAL project is to promote sustainable and resource-conserving pond management in order to contribute to more income and more fish products for the food-insecure population in Assam and Odisha. The target groups are small-scale producers as well as upstream and downstream actors in the value chain. Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Aquaculture Service Providers (ASPs) receive technical and business development trainings on sustainable aquaculture to strengthen their entrepreneurial and financial capacities.
