DIVERSITY EDITORIAL FELLOWSHIP 2022

Loading

Deadline: 05 February 2022

The Caravan occupies a singular position among Indian magazines. Its stories present a unique mix of detailed reportage and vivid writing, with a commitment to the art of storytelling, whether the subject is politics, culture or art.

The Caravan is published by the Delhi Press Group, one of India’s leading publishers. Started in 1939, Delhi Press today publishes 33 magazines in 10 languages.

Due to the near-complete absence of journalists from marginalised communities in the Indian media, there is inadequate sensitivity in coverage to issues of caste, communalism and discrimination. The Caravan is deeply committed to improving the representation of marginalised communities in the media. A 2019 study on diversity in Indian newsrooms found that The Caravan appeared to be an “exception” to a pattern of Indian English-language magazines having staffs largely drawn from the dominant castes. The Caravan has one of the most diverse newsrooms in the country today, but we know we can still do better.

We plan to add one new diversity editorial fellow to our newsroom. The position is reserved for candidates from socially marginalised communities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Commissioning pieces for the magazine and working with writers to shape these for publication
  • Editing and copy-editing stories
  • Maintaining an evolving and current bank of stories and story ideas
  • Supervising staff writers and freelance writers as they work on stories
  • Soliciting pitches and recruiting new writers for the magazine
  • Staying up to speed on news and current events, especially in the areas of politics and culture
  • Importantly, as a member of the editorial team, to be a keen observer and fast learner of Indian politics, culture and society
