Y-PEER is a groundbreaking and comprehensive voluntary youth-to-youth initiative. It is a network of youth-led and youth-serving civil society organizations, governmental organizations, community-based organizations, institutions, youth activists, young people, youth advocates and trainers working together on youth-related issues. The issues championed by Y-PEER are physical and mental health, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) including HIV/AIDS; gender-based violence (GBV), youth participation, civic engagement and development of a culture of citizenship; preparedness and emergency response and peacebuilding. Y-PEER is a global network of more than 2000 non-profit organizations and governmental institutions; with active memberships of over 33,000 young people and hundreds of thousands of volunteers from the Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) articulated a bold new vision about the relationships between population, development and individual well-being. At the ICPD in Cairo, 179 countries adopted a forward-looking, 20-year Programme of Action that continues to serve as a comprehensive guide to people-centred development progress. The ICPD Programme of Action was remarkable in recognising that reproductive health and rights, women’s empowerment, and gender equality are cornerstones of population and development programmes.

ICPD25 Regional Youth Forum was organised on 23-24 September 2019 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of ICPD and push the  ICPD and Youth Agenda. It was also the only Regional Forum of Young People focusing on ICPD before the Nairobi summit. Similarly, Nairobi Summit was organised on 12-14 November, which more than 8000 individuals and representatives attended.

Three objectives shaped the process around the Nairobi Summit, aimed at renewing momentum to fully achieve the ICPD and the SDGs by 2030: 1. Obtain political reaffirmation of the ICPD Programme of Action within the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs. 2. Build political and financial momentum to fulfil the unfinished business of the ICPD Programme of Action. 3. Reinvigorate and expand the community of people necessary to push forward the ICPD agenda on all fronts.
