The Centre for Economic Data and Analysis (CEDA) has been set up by the Economics Department of Ashoka University with the primary objective of facilitating informed data-driven debate and discussion about issues of social and economic development in India.

CEDA’s data portal hosts data from various administrative and official surveys of India, covering fields such as demography, employment as well as health, at the state and district levels. CEDA’s aim is to put data at the forefront when it comes to understanding the social, political and economic realities of India.

About the position
At CEDA, we are looking to hire a Data Manager who will play a key role in building and managing our collection of economic data analysis tools and datasets and in ensuring data integrity. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in both programming and data processing, with a passion for enabling wider access to socio-economic data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full-stack development of data visualisation dashboards & APIs, with full ownership of the product from design proposal to shipping the final product.
  • Develop and maintain necessary data infrastructure, including databases, data warehouses, and data pipelines, ensuring efficient data storage and retrieval.
  • Collaborate with the team to extract economic data sets from public sources, build pipelines and ensure data quality, integrity and accessibility.
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, tools, and methodologies in economic data analysis and contribute to the continuous improvement of data management processes.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members regarding data management best practices and data analysis techniques.
  • Collaborate with external partners and stakeholders to facilitate data sharing and collaboration for research and policy initiatives.

Desired qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Statistics, or related field, with at least 2 years of professional experience. A Master’s degree and/or experience in working in journalistic, research, or academic settings is a bonus.
  • Proficient in Python for data manipulation, automation, and visualisation (Pandas, requests, Selenium, FastAPI, Plotly), and experienced with Node.js and frameworks (Next.js, React.js, Express.js).
  • Familiarity with data management, SQL databases, and data integration methodologies, along with AWS/cloud platforms, Linux, shell scripting, Docker, and YAML.
  • Understanding of platform, database, API, caching, and web services, as well as DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, Git/GitHub, and automation.
  • The ability to work independently without the need for constant supervision
  • Experience in data analysis and interactive visualisation in Python and R (Plotly, Shiny, Leaflet) would be preferable, though it is not essential
