The Rural Development & Governance MA Programme, School of Livelihoods and Development, TISS Hyderabad is delighted to announce weekly Grameen Lecture Series interactive lecture.
This talk will focus on how the ‘rural’ is changing in its economic and habitational dimensions in the context of the post-reform neo-liberal political economy. I will discuss two empirical cases—one from Andhra Pradesh where a risky hydrological regime of accumulation has, over the last two decades, created a small horticulturist elite (largely Kapus and Other Backward Castes) among a mass of dry land farmers. The second empirical case is from Noida—from Uttar Pradesh where upper and middle landholding castes from de-agrarianized villages have recreated ‘rural’ identity in an urban space. These cases suggest that the Indian rural society is differentiated in multiple forms but is commonly financialized. Paradoxically, some of these changes seem to be used to create new (post-agrarian) ‘rural’ identities.
Speaker: Nilotpal Kumar, Associate Professor at School of Development, Azim Premji University (Bangalore).
