About the Urban Sanitation Team:
Dasra’s aspiration is by 2030, to enable Safe Sanitation and Water for Urban India (~8000 Cities) thereby enabling dignity and equity to our most vulnerable. The Urban Sanitation team plays the role of the field catalyser to bring together funders, governments, communities and sector experts. We have been championing collaborative action towards scalable impact by enabling inclusive and integrated citywide sanitation services for human waste management in urban areas. Dasra anchors the National Faecal Sludge and Septage Management Alliance (NFSSM Alliance) as its Secretariat. The NFSSM Alliance was instrumental in passing India’s first national policy on Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India in 2017. The Alliance has now grown into a collaborative body comprising of 35+ organisations (NGOs, CSOs, Academic Institutions, Think Tanks etc.) and 120+ individuals, working towards policy recommendations and collaborative action at national, state and city level. The Alliance works in collaboration with government stakeholders like the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, NITI Aayog and the Central Finance Commission. We work with our network of partners in over 19 states to develop policy recommendations, support governments through evidence and best practices and funnel up voices of communities, with a focus on Gender and Inclusivity, Municipal Strengthening, Technology and Innovation and Changing the Narrative. The team also provides advisory support – leveraging learnings from India in South Asia. Website: www.nfssmalliance.org. The Regional Hubs team has facilitated the setting up of strongholds and
centres of excellence in multiple states. By looking at geography, policy, and the level of development in states,
the team activates NFSSM Alliance partners and government stakeholders to drive impact in sanitation and water.
