Indus Action was founded by Harvard students with the vision of solving India’s deep-rooted problems via public policy. The organization seeks to identify the wide gaps that exist in policy framing and their grassroots implementation. It also aims to mobilize public resources and empower communities to bridge that gap. Indus Action’s first campaign was launched in 2013 to support the effective implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2005. Under this section it is mandatory for unaided, non-minority private schools to reserve at least 25% of seats in Nursery, KG and Class 1 for children belonging to disadvantaged and economically weaker sections.

About Care to Play

Care to Play is the collective mission of Indus Action, Saajha, Trickle Up, Rocket Learning, and IDinsight to serve five million+ vulnerable children in India. The collective aims to create thriving environments for the families of 5 million vulnerable children to provide early childhood education resulting in pathways out of poverty.

We invest in ensuring children are cared for during the first 2000 days and are mission-oriented towards sustainable development outcomes for low-income families.

We are a collective of agile organizations with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including community members. Each member plays a key role in the life cycle and ecosystem of a low-income family in India. Saajha and Rocket Learning ensure that informed parents support children with resources to create a safe learning environment for children to thrive inside and outside their homes. Trickle Up and Indus Action cultivate community leadership for mothers and caregivers, gain agency and make informed economic decisions at family and community levels by raising awareness of legislated rights, creating economic opportunities, and social inclusion. The Senior Leadership of all organizations will operate through a Steering Committee anchored by IDinsight. It will aid data-driven interventions and decisions to improve the outcomes.

Position Summary 

The Programme Manager will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the pilot across the three selected areas. They will support/manage the Program Coordinators directly, in the field. They will also be responsible for the capacity building of these individuals to ensure smooth operations of the project. An experience in caregiving support and Livelihood is preferred. Field insights and learning will be documented extensively by them.

Knowledge and Technical Skills

  • Strong people management skills
  • Strong project and operation management skills
  • Strong event management and session facilitation skills
  • Strong proficiency in MS-Office
  • Proficiency in Hindi and English (speaking, reading, and writing)
  • Report writing and documentation skills
  • Ability to break down complex concepts and ideas and communicate in simple and easy language.
  • Comfort with technology usage and Survey tools.

Education and Experience 

Reaching our vision demands that we have the best and brightest leaders working to lead our organization. Here are the minimum qualifications we look for:

  • Graduation/Post Graduation – preferably Social Science / MSW / Public Policy
  • Experience in Policy and Entitlements and/ or Caregiving support
  • Certification in Human Subjects Research is preferred
  • Must have: Field/community engagement experience
  • Good to have: Fellowship experience
  • 4 – 5 years of work experience (We consider Fellowship experience)

Financial Contribution

The Programme Manager will be compensated based on the Indus Action‘s compensation benchmarking rubric. The range of compensation will be between 60 – 75k. The candidate would need to use their own laptop and the organization will bear the annual maintenance cost of up to Rs. 12,000/year as per actuals.
