The KARM Fellowship is a program for girls from low-income families who desire financial independence, and therefore, aspire to pursue any degree course at Delhi University or Jamia Milia Islamia. The Fellowship offers financial assistance (Fees, Books, Travel allowance, Laptops, Dongles) and a holistic capacity building program based on the pillars of Education, Mentoring, Community Service and Life Skills – our mission is to empower women students to pursue successful and meaningful careers.
The KARM Fellowship Empowering women school graduates to pursue a college education of choice is the one permanent way to allow each family and thereby, the larger community to achieve an aspirational quality of life. This larger thought motivates us to establish a cohort of Fellows each year who will assist one another in the pursuit of their goals, enabling a meaningful ripple in their communities.

The KARM Fellowship will connect each Fellow to mentors, career counsellors and experts, to ensure a wholesome learning experience, thereby enabling brighter professional futures.

Need for the KARM Fellowship

The KARM Fellowship is an expression of the founders’ commitment to higher education for women. It came about from the knowledge that women from underserved backgrounds are unable to study beyond primary school for its perceived lack of importance in homes and societies with scarce resources. According to data from UNESCO, while there appears to be some progress in reducing gender gap at primary level schooling, the gap at secondary, high school and college level continues to be distressingly high.
The KARM Fellowship answers this crying need by supporting the higher educational aspirations of capable young women through financial support, mentoring and life skills development, in order to make education valuable, accessible and empowering under the Fellowship.

Vision of the KARM Fellowship

Our experience has taught us the value of Education, Mentoring, Life Skills and Community Service. Basing our Fellowship on these key pillars, we aim to enable the professional aspirations of future women leaders in their areas of choice.
The KARM Fellowship aspires to foster a community of financially independent, compassionate, driven women who are committed to becoming enablers and change leaders in communities of their choice.

The overarching theme for envisioning KARM Fellowship is Education-to make it valuable, accessible and empowering.

Our Fellowship will include:

  1. Financial support towards rent for out stationed girls; college and exam fees, laptop, dongle, conveyance and books & stationery allowance for all Fellows
  2. Mentorship to each Fellow through personalised sessions and guidance through the duration of the Fellowship.
  3. Life Skill trainings to enable skill building and positive attitudes
  4. Internships to ensure an informed view of the World of Work
  5. Fifty hours of Community Service for the duration of the Fellowship
  6. A comprehensive English curriculum that runs through the three years focussed on writing and speaking better

Enabling this vision are the following pillars- :

1. Education –  Through a college degree to be earned by pursuing and observing all stipulations of a three-year full-time bachelors’ course from Delhi University/Jamia Millia.

2.  Mentoring-  Each Fellow to be paired with a mentor to observe and learn from, and to receive counselling and direction related to career planning, skill acquisition and experiential challenges.

This will allow for the young Fellow to not only observe and learn from this association by proximity, but also to receive counselling and direction related to individual career planning, skill acquisition, and experiential challenges.

3.  Life Skills-  To fulfil aspirational employability related skill gaps and enable motivation and work ethic through KARM Talks, KARM Learning, KARM English and KARM Connect.

4.  Community Service-  To help shape a compassionate, grounded and empathetic personality, the KARM Fellowship has woven community service into its very fabric, by mandating 50 hours of work in the community, through the duration of the Fellowship.

Who is a KARM Fellow?

She is an eighteen-year-old girl from a low income background. Driven and determined, she knows that she can impact her circumstances positively by working hard.
