Counsellor – Azim Premji University

Azim Premji University was established under the Azim Premji University Act 2010 of the Government of Karnataka. Azim Premji Foundation, the sponsoring body set up the University as a fully philanthropic and not-for-profit entity, with a clear social purpose. The University started in 2011 and since then have admitted over 2000 students.

We invite applications for the role of Counsellor to provide psychological and emotional support to the members of the University community.

ENGAGEMENT Full-time

As a counsellor you will be part of a team of mental health professionals and support the psychological and emotional well-being of the students and members of the University through counselling and crisis interventions.
You will need patience, empathy, and compassion for students coming from very varied backgrounds and dealing with a range of issues and challenges so that you can provide them a safe and secure space to talk about their challenges and concerns.

Candidates belonging to historically under represented social groups and communities, including those from queer community, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

As a counsellor you will be: 

• Providing individual and group counselling sessions.
• Building rapport with students on campus to maximize the effectiveness of counselling.
• Developing a systemic guidance and support program which addresses personal, social, and academic development.
• Nurturing and promoting an environment for all members to be sensitive and empathetic towards others and co-creating a caring and supportive culture on campus.
• Conducting or organizing regular training programs/​workshops on varied topics ranging from gender bias, class politics, stress management, peer support etc.
• Collaborating and consulting with parents, guardians, faculty, and other stakeholders regarding student wellbeing.
• Facilitating referrals for domain experts as and when needed.
• Creating content based on an understanding of the needs of the community to increase awareness and promote a positive mental health framework.
• Performing the above tasks while adhering to policies and ethical standards of the University.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Psychology/​Counselling
• Relevant experience in the field will be preferred
