Project DEFY: Project DEFY is a non profit based out of Bangalore, India that has been working in the sector of self design learning through learning spaces called ‘Nooks’. 1. Communication Manager, Meghalaya

CM Youth Centre: The Government of Meghalaya aims to establish 20 rural innovation centres for youth, called the Chief Minister’s Youth Centre with an aim to build resilience, sustainability, and problem-solving skills in the next generation from the community. The youth centres are also to be established to bridge the digital divide with the help of innovation and entrepreneurship skills by providing access to the internet along with open learning opportunities. What is the Role: The Communications Manager at the CM Youth Center is part of the state program team managing the overall communication planning, implementation for the different programs. The role entails taking ownership of online communication management, content creation and management, editorial inputs to reports amongst others.

Communication, as a role, has a very deep impact on the work we do, and as such should not be understood as only social media posting. As a Communication Manager you ensure that the impact of our work is visible to the various partners and stakeholders, the communities, the general public, and quite importantly also to our own team. This requires a deep understanding of our work and a general understanding of alternative education. It will be your task to turn data into understandable information for a variety of people and to help them see the possibilities such a format of learning can offer.

Key Responsibilities:

A) Online Communication Management:

● Create and execute CM Youth Centre digital media presence and strategy in coordination with the programme leadership;

● Manage the CM Youth Centre website and all website related design, content and analytics, including liaising with and managing the website development vendor;

● Create and manage all digital media channels associated with the programme, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, MailChimp (Newsletter) over the course of the engagement;

● Work with the cluster and centre level team to enable and empower them to create content for the various communication channels. This would include assisting in capacity building of the team for writing for different channels, and partnering with them for ideation and editing the final content.

B) Content Creation and Management

● Take ownership of the Annual Report including data collection, collation, content and design;

● Take ownership for the collation and documentation of the progress reports of various work pieces being undertaken by the team and the Programme;

● Create content about the Programme for the blog, newsletter, social media on a regular basis;

● Manage creation of videos and short film(s) about the Programme throughout the year;

● Manage all media presence of the programme, liaising with SMF, DEFY and Govt. of Meghalaya Media & Communications / PR Departments as and when required.

C) Additional Responsibilities

● Provide strategic communications support to the Programme Team;

● Any other communications requirements that may evolve in line with skills of the person over time.

● Train the various team members on effective communication skills especially story telling, blog writing, efficient and engaging reporting.

Requirements:

● A minimum of 4 years of demonstrable experience in social media management, content creation and editorial, communications management or related profile.

● Educational qualifications or experience in literature, journalism, communications, marketing, design or a related field would be a plus.

● Excellent writing and editing skills in English. Competence in Khasi/Garo/Pnar language writing and editing would be a bonus.

● An understanding of alternate education, and preferable experience working in the field.

● Excellent aesthetic and design sensibilities.

● Technical skills with / understanding of basic website design (HTML, CSS), image/video/sound editing (Adobe Design Suite and the like) would be a strong bonus.

● Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously and demonstrated ability to review and prioritise work independently and effectively

Position Summary:

The Fundraising Associate role at the Bangalore office is a crucial role which entails looking and reaching out to funding organisations, helping streamline funding processes, and accessing potential funding opportunities for the expansion of the Nook concept locally and globally.

Roles & Responsibilities:

● Identify, engage and invest key organizations, foundations and companies to support setting up of new nooks.

● Find suitable donors, assessing donor alignment, reaching out to potential donors and following up on leads, arranging meetings and making presentations.

● Research new income streams such as grants and social project capital.

● Regularly monitor donor websites and identify investor opportunities matching the work of the organization

● Create and maintain database of funding partners and opportunities

● Write and own proposals, reports, and any documentation to request for, procure, and continue to access funding

● Manage accounts and communication with any and all funding sources from organizations, foundations and companies

● Develop and maintain relationships with coalitions, groups, forums and any other similar collectives to further generate income along with building lasting relationships with existing investors/donors.

● Manage internal and external deadlines and communication for all fundraising activities

Required skills:

● At least 2 years experience working with fundraising in a nonprofit organization, foundation, trust, or corporate company

● A proven track record in creating high quality RFP, proposals and communication for external stakeholders, and raising funds

What is the Role: The M&E Officer will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring high quality inputs and achieving the desired results within a timely manner while maintaining programmes’ strategic vision. The M&E Officer will assist in preparing reports to show progress and impact, and will monitor programme activities. The M&E Officer will also be responsible for collection and analysis of data and work closely with the programme team.

Key Responsibilities:

● Take the qualitative and quantitative M&E system, implement and oversee programme monitoring activities.

● Develop and strengthen monitoring and evaluation procedures. Monitor data quality tracking progress of activities and contribute to staff capacity building initiatives as necessary.

5. Head of Impact

Employment: Fulltime

Salary: 10 Lakhs PA

Overview:

Head of Impact is driving the organisation’s Measurement & Evaluation unit. She or he oversees the information, documentation & data management strategy, ensures that the strategy is implemented and further developed, analyses and interprets the collected data according to various qualitative and quantitative methods, infers findings and conclusions and publishes these across a variety of different formats (such as donor reports, internal reports, case studies, press articles, learner stories,…). While the main focus is on the organisation’s Nook self-designed learning centre programme, the Head of Impact’s role also includes developing and implementing M&E strategies for other programmes and activities carried out by Project DEFY.

Beyond the regular impact management tasks, the Head of Impact is also in charge of developing a comprehensive, long-term research strategy in collaboration with partner organisations, external institutional partners and other stakeholders. The goal of developing this long-term research strategy is to create a framework to evaluate the impact of self-designed learning through programmes such as the Nook on the individual, community and society level and provide comprehensive, reliable and objective data and findings in order to establish the self-designed learning approach as realistic (and better) alternative to the mainstream education system.

The Head of Impact’s integral role means he or she works closely together with the DEFY programme managers and programme heads and the CEO.

Roles & Responsibilities Summary:

● Managing existing M&E Strategy: analysis of collected data & information

● Processing and articulation of data & information in meaningful ways across a variety of publication formats

● Continuous evaluation and development of M&E Strategy

● Development of new M&E strategies for new programmes implemented by Project DEFY and publication of relevant findings across a variety of publication formats

What is the Role
The Programme Manager role at DEFY is a crucial leadership role which entails overseeing and managing the operations of our Nooks across India. As the Programme Manager, you will be working closely with our local partners and implementing organisations and their staff in order to make sure that the various self-designed learning centres run smoothly and efficiently, and new innovations and programmes are being introduced and run successfully in the Nook. Besides managing existing partnerships, you will also work together with other DEFY team members to forge and create new partnerships so we can expand the Nook concept all over the country. As the Programme Manager, you will get an exciting opportunity to work together with a dedicated team at our Bangalore office as well as on the ground in our various Nook locations to make India’s learning revolution a reality.

Who are we looking for
We are looking for an energetic, proactive individual who is passionate about the alternative education sector and has some practical on-ground experience in this area. Having been involved in hands-on, maker-projects and technology-based innovations would be desirable. The candidate should also have some experience in managing projects and teams and, ideally, in building long-term partnerships. Having a track record in raising funds is considered as an additional advantage. The Programme Manager also should be able to
communicate well and clearly with a variety of stakeholders, from local Nook Managers to implementation partners, funders, media and others. Turning thoughts into processes and having excellent documentation and report-writing skills is another important factor. Having project management experience is an important skill for the role since you will oversee all the Indian Nooks. As our Nooks are spread across India (urban, rural and remote), you will be excited to travel for extended periods of time to the various locations.

Short Summary of the Role: The Nook Fellow (Community) is the administrator, in-house facilitator, and point of contact of the Nook. They coordinate the day-to-day running of the Nooktogether with the learners and ensure that a safe, inclusive learning environment is being created in which learners are able to pursue any learning goal of their choice and make continuous progress in expanding their skills and knowledge. The Nook Fellow (Community) reports to the Program Manager, Meghalaya State Team, by collecting data and creating periodic reports at the Nook.

Description: Nooks are ‘schools without teachers’ in marginalized communities that provide everyone with free access to technology, tools, resources and information to design and pursue their own education. Nook Fellow (Community) will be co-leading this grassroots-education initiative alongside and with our learners and Nook Fellow (Innovation). They will be working with a community of 40-80 Learners to pursue their own, hands-on projects; help establish the idea of self-designed learning in the local community; facilitate and encourage discussions among the community on a broad variety of topics and issues; and – ultimately – enable local community members to run the space on their own and create a truly sustainable, community-led form of education that helps underprivileged individuals to pursue and catch their dreams, and marginalised communities to prosper and grow.

Nook Fellows are self-confident, expressive and communicative individuals between 20 and 30 years old who have the commitment to live and grow with a local community. Rather than a mere job, they see the role as a community experience and a way to solve a community problem as well as work towards substantial change in the education landscape. They are interested in project-based learning, have an in-depth understanding of the concept of and approach towards self-designed learning, and have a hands-on attitude to learn with the Nook Community and support learners in their various projects.

Nook Fellows are expected to apply their experience in alternative learning and pedagogy in the Nook. They co-create a free, safe, and inclusive self-learning space together with the learners. They will also receive regular in-house training that they must attend and successfully complete to do this.

As local, community-based staff, Nook Fellows are also the focal point for collecting and providing information, data etc. to the team and work closely with the operations, communications and impact leads.

Tasks Summary:

The Nook Fellow (Community) must perform the following tasks –

● Coordinate the set-up of the Nook in cooperation with the Hopper (where applicable)

● Keep the Nook open in the set hours

● Ensure the Nook is clean and safe

● Maintain equipment and keep inventory

● Ensure every learner gets equal and ample access to the Nook

● Co-create a safe, inclusive, and open learning space together with the learners

● Facilitate activities and sessions to help to build a community of learners in the Nook (games, field trips and excursions, sports events, movie nights, team-building activities)

● Create a monthly budget for equipment, materials and other monetary requirements, and send it to the DEFY Ops team

● Receive funds and make purchases according to the monthly budget

● Conduct the induction program at the nook every three months

● Conduct goal-setting sessions and monitor and assist with the progress of learners in achieving their individual learning goals throughout

● Conduct outreach to engage more new learners from the community

● Conduct periodic workshops and community events, including internal and external review sessions after each goal cycle

● Organize internal events such as workshops, skill sessions, or new experiences relevant to the Nook and its learners by inviting outside guests and creating a network of outside facilitators

● Fill out Datasheet and Goal sheet and assist with conducting surveys and other forms of research for impact assessment

● Assist Project DEFY team in any operations, communications, and impact-related work

● Create social media and blog posts from nook

● Collect profiles and other information about the learners

● Participate in the Nook Forum

● Receive guests and any stakeholders who come to visit the Nook and tell them about it

● Successfully complete the training program

● Write and share reports on external training visits

Overview: The Nook Fellow (Innovation) is in charge of the creative and innovation promotion at the Nook and helps learners to come up and develop their learning projects in a broad variety of learning and skill areas. The Innovation Lead’s chief function is to enable and support the learners of the Nook to develop their ideas and projects and provide the technical help that they may need in doing so. The person is responsible for assisting the Nook Fellow (Community) in running the Nook. He or she reports to Program Manager, Meghalaya State Team.

Experience :

  • Should have built advanced maker-projects using technology as well as hand tools and instruments
  • Should have experience in organizing/facilitating learning sessions and workshops
  • Should have experience or basic skills in using software like 3D designing, video editing etc.
  • Should have worked with/in communities, especially in rural settings and/or urban slums within the country
  • Should have experience in education or related areas through creative and non-conventional endeavors.

  • Should be ready to dive deeper into and learn new skill areas so as to better support the learners

Skills :

  • Able to explain complex and difficult concepts in simplified manner
  • Able to operate/use basic tools and machines of Carpentry, Welding etc.
  • Able to build projects with technologies
  • Organizing and facilitating learning sessions and technical workshops
  • Finding different learning sources for learners from online, contact and community resources
  • Able to communicate with clarity in local language and English.
  • Very good with digital tools like MS Office / Google apps and software for 3D designing, illustration, video editing etc.
  • Very proficient in English and one of the local languages such as Khasi, Garo or Pnar (required).

Key Tasks:

The IL must perform the following tasks

1. Helping learners identify learning goals and develop action plans on how to reach them

2. Support learners in their learning journeys at the Nook

3. Supporting learners identify tools, make project budgets and make purchases of required tools and materials.

4. Reviewing learning goal/project progress

5. Helping learners with technical support when they are unable to move across barriers

6. Inviting technical experts for talks and workshops

7. Organizing technical sharing sessions

8. Conduct periodic induction programmes at the nook
