Application deadline January 10, 2024

Prajnya Trust Prajnya is a Chennai-based nonprofit working for peace, justice and security through two broad areas of activity–gender equality activism and peace education. Our activities are research, public education and network-building. We are funded primarily by individual donations; our work therefore belongs to the community and count each donor as a fellow-traveler towards our vision. Extremely small in every way, Prajnya’s volunteers have taken this journey forward one task, one day at a time, towards a tenth anniversary on September 9, 2017.

Prajnya invites applications for the 2024 R. Rajaram GRIT Research Fellowships.

Founded in the memory of R. Rajaram in his centenary year, the Fellowship is intended to support original research on a subject relating to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The Fellowship has also included specific research responsibilities at Prajnya.

The 2024 Rajaram Fellowship is envisioned as a programme of support–financial, mentoring and networking for original research on sexual or gender-based violence. The projects must be completed within a mutually agreed time-frame.

Fellowship projects

The proposed project will study any aspect of SGBV. We are open to supporting projects that investigate the social, economic and/or political conditions surrounding the occurrence of SGBV; their prevalence and/or consequences; how policies and budget allocations have worked or should work; or any other relevant topic. The project should be original and have a feasible research design.

Academic/ Policy Research Fellows will have at minimum a Master’s degree in the social sciences, policy studies or humanities with evidence of research experience (for instance, a published or unpublished research paper). Applicants can be early-career academics (PhD students or postdocs), employees at a policy/research organisation, or independent researchers who are seeking additional funding for their research. The primary language for written projects will be English and therefore, English proficiency is essential but research proficiency in one other Indian language is desirable.

How to apply

Applications will be accepted only via email (jobs.prajnya@gmail.com) and must be submitted by January 10, 2024. Only complete applications will be considered, and they must include:

  • A cover letter of no more than one page (one side), stating why you are interested in this Fellowship; what you propose to research and why it is an important subject; and relating your experience to this position.
  • Your c.v., fully listing academic and professional experience, as well as any publications.
  • A list of two references, including a brief statement of how they know you, their contact information. These should ideally be academic or policy references.
  • A short project proposal (1000-1500 words) which, while written without jargon, must clearly answer the following questions:
    1. What is the proposed research about?
(This must be clearly and concisely stated, as a problem and not a title.)
    2. What is the academic and historical context for this project?
(The proposal need not include a full literature review but must indicate that the applicant understands the context of the proposed question and is aware of work that has been done in the area.)
    3. What are the research methods proposed?
(We are looking for projects that would utilise both primary and secondary research.)
    4. What is the research plan?
(This should be as practical as possible and show that the applicant will complete the project in a timely manner.)
    5. What will be the product of this research?
    6. What is the relevance of this research to the analysis of gender violence and advocacy for its elimination?
(This should be written very clearly, explaining the claim fully.)
    7. A list of bibliographic references relevant to the project proposed. This will not be part of the proposal word count.
