Research Analyst – Industrial Sustainability and Competitiveness

Reporting to Senior Programme Lead

Purpose :The Industrial Sustainability and Competitiveness (ISC) team aims to support India’s low carbon growth aspirations by advancing the uptake of energy and resource efficiency practices as well as the use of energy source with low/no carbon footprints within the manufacturing sector. The ISC team is working on several different initiatives, which include – supply chain analysis of the natural gas infrastructure in India, building resilience and competitiveness in the micro, small, and medium (MSME) industry, and characterizing the industrial sector value chains to analyse various aspects such as carbon footprint, financial strength, resource requirements, and jobs supported. The candidate for this role is expected to have the ability to grasp various subject matter including, industrial processes, fuel use in equipment, greenhouse gases, and supply chain concepts. The ISC team conducts various

kinds of tech-economic assessments and the candidate should have familiarity with economic assessment concepts. As the ISC team expands its horizon the candidate will be expected to be involved in a variety of projects dealing with sustainability and competitiveness issues.

Job Duties and Accountabilities

● Collecting data and preparing database of capacity, production, consumption, prices, application on resources (e.g. coal, oil and gas, iron ore, and other non-fuel minerals) from different sources

● Undertaking basic modelling exercises to outline alternative scenarios for resource efficiency and security for India

● Responsible for reviewing large amounts of data and analyzing the information using a variety of software tools and methodologies

● Data collection and management from various sources. Bringing in web-scraping and intelligent data processing techniques must be an integral part of all data driven work

● To conduct both traditional and desktop/secondary research using various external information sources

● Develop work plans and quantitative methods for various analyses based on instructions from senior member(s) of the team

● To write briefs and issue notes which could be circulated among senior Government of India officials and other stakeholders

● Travel to various sites (as required basis) to collect information, interview stakeholders in government and private sector

● Work with research teams on specific research programmes, especially around Industrial Sustainability and Competitiveness

● Provide research content for organisation’s web pages, blogs, policy briefs etc.

● Deliver one detailed project report and support with another project report by the end of the performance period.

● Deliver or support two opinion pieces either individually or in collaboration with a senior member of the team.

Project/Programme Assistance

● Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations and advocacy material

● Assist with the organisation of roundtables to promote industrial decarbonisation. Prepare notes and briefs for the roundtables on energy and resources efficiency.

● Support efforts to use new media platforms for wide dissemination of CEEW’s work and, in turn, closer engagement with the wider community

● Responsible for necessary documenting, analysing and presenting information from programme and project reports for decision making, learning, and accountability

● Contribute to reports and other research products as part of the research team

● Participate in weekly team meetings and assist in preparing minutes

● Accompany team members for meetings with other stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow upEducation and Key Skills

Selection Criteria

Education and Key Skills

● Superior academic credentials, preferably a Master’s degree with specialisation in industry-research/manufacturing systems/resource management/energy economics/ or relevant streams.

● Applicants with Bachelor’s degree (engineering/economics/etc.) and equivalent experience are also encouraged to apply.

● Must be adept in advanced MS Word, Powerpoint, and Excel skills. Should have the ability to analyse large datasets with ease. Ability to utilize VBA in Excel is preferred.

● Prior experience in use of analytical/statistical tools like MATLAB/ STATA/ R/ Python is preferred.

Business Experience

● Years of Experience: 0 – 2; candidates with experience up to 5 years will be considered for a programme associate role.

Main Skills

● Self-starters with strong analytic skills including quantitative research skills (statistics), and, qualitative research methodologies to collate and analyse information in a meaningful manner

● Excellent written and oral communication skills, should be able to demonstrate good report writing skills

● Ability to identify technical and policy issues, interpret data, develop quantitative methods, and identify/ develop creative solutions

● High quality publications in peer reviewed journals would be an advantage

● Willingness to learn new research and project management skills

● Ability to adapt and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment
